Wayne Rooney issues ‘crazy’ Morgan Whittaker reaction amid Rangers links to Plymouth ace

Plymouth Argyle manager Wayne Roney said only a “crazy” offer would pry Morgan Whittaker away from the club this summer amid reported interest from Rangers.

It has been reported that the Gers have had an offer of £7million rejected for the attacker but that a second bid might be launched (Daily Record, 19 July).

Speaking to Plymouth Live (21 July) after their 5-1 pre-season win against Cheltenham Town, Rooney shared his stance on the future of Whittaker.

“It’s the first I know,” said Rooney.

“I have said this before, Morgan is a fantastic player and I’m really enjoying working with him. We value Morgan very highly. Anything other than a crazy bid, we won’t be entertaining.

“Ultimately, I want Morgan to stay at the football club because he’s a very good player and he’s the player who can make a difference.”

Rangers should step away from making another bid for Morgan Whittaker

It’s evident that Rangers need another forward to be brought into the club this summer, especially with the futures of both Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers still up in the air.

Igamane is a solid addition [Seabstien Denis, 5 July] but, at just 21 years old, it seems somewhat unfair for the burden of the club’s attack to be laid upon the shoulders of the Morocco international.

Whittaker would be a stellar addition to Philippe Clement’s ranks but after their bid was rebuffed, it begs the question of how much a deal would actually cost.

Not only does this show how highly Plymouth rate Whittaker but it should also have put off the Glasgow-based outfit from making a move.

It has already been reported that the club are set to make an improved bid but any higher than £7m feels like a lot of money and they would need Whittaker to really hit the ground running.

Especially when Rangers-linked Lawerence Shankland would cost the same or perhaps less and has already proven his goalscoring prowess in the Scottish Premiership.
