Todd Cantwell Requests Rangers Exit as Key Transfers Loom

Midfielder Todd Cantwell Seeks Departure from Rangers Amid Major Squad Changes

In a surprising turn of events, Todd Cantwell has officially requested to leave Rangers. The midfielder, who has been pivotal in the team’s midfield, expressed his desire for a new challenge. Rangers manager Philippe Clement confirmed Cantwell’s transfer request during a press conference following their 2-1 friendly defeat to Birmingham. This potential exit marks the beginning of a significant squad reshuffle for the Ibrox club.

Clement stated, “I want to give some clarity about one thing. Todd Cantwell came into my office and expressed his wish for a new adventure. Despite our good relationship and long discussions, he reiterated his desire to leave. So, I need to focus on the players committed to Rangers for the upcoming season.”

Cantwell’s decision is just the start of a busy transfer window for Rangers. Vice-captain Connor Goldson is on the verge of joining Aris Limassol in Cyprus. Goldson, who joined Rangers in 2018, has been instrumental in the club’s recent successes, including their Scottish Premiership title and Europa League final appearance in 2022. His departure will free up significant wages, aiding Clement in his squad rebuild.

Key Transfers on the Horizon for Rangers

Rangers are also negotiating the exit of captain James Tavernier to Trabzonspor, which, along with Goldson’s move, could save the club over £70,000 a week in wages. These funds are crucial as the team prepares for their Champions League qualifier, with the registration deadline fast approaching on August 1.

Meanwhile, Dutch forward Sam Lammers is in talks with FC Twente over a £2 million transfer. Lammers, who had a successful loan spell at FC Utrecht, scoring 11 goals in 20 games, joined Rangers last summer for £3.5 million.

In a bid to strengthen their squad, Rangers are in advanced negotiations to sign Wolfsburg winger Vaclav Cerny on loan. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance the team’s attacking options for the upcoming season.

Clement’s Vision for Rangers’ Future

Manager Philippe Clement has been clear about his vision for Rangers. Speaking during the club’s pre-season camp in the Netherlands, he emphasized that the only player not for sale is goalkeeper Jack Butland. Clement explained, “If there’s a significant offer for any player, we’ll consider it. Butland, however, is irreplaceable at the moment.”

Rangers have been active in the transfer market, signing seven players this summer, including Hamza Igamane, Jefte, Clinton Nsiala, Liam Kelly, Connor Barron, Oscar Cortes, and making Mohamed Diomande’s loan move permanent. These additions highlight Clement’s commitment to building a competitive squad capable of challenging for titles.
