Everton Boss Sean Dyche in the Running for England Manager

Following Gareth Southgate’s announcement that he will step down as England manager, Everton’s Sean Dyche is being considered a potential successor. The news comes after England’s disappointing Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain. While early contenders include Eddie Howe and Graham Potter, Everton defender Ashley Young believes Dyche should be a serious candidate for the role [Sky Sports, 16 July].

In a statement to BBC Sport on Tuesday (16 July), Young expressed his support for Dyche, saying, “I don’t think even when Gareth Southgate got the job, he [Dyche] was considered to be England manager. Who can say the gaffer shouldn’t be considered because you don’t know until someone is given that role? You have had previous managers like Steve McClaren, Fabio Capello, Roy Hodgson who have come in with a longer career in the game, with more success but have not been able to get the England team to, where I feel, an England team should have been. There will be names thrown in the hat left, right and centre and for the job the manager has done, of course, his name should be in the hat.”

Dyche’s track record speaks volumes about his capability as a manager. During his tenure at Burnley and Everton, he consistently led teams to perform beyond expectations. Everton supporters, while not wanting to lose Dyche, would likely agree that he deserves consideration for the England manager role.

However, Dyche’s style of play, which is more direct compared to the approaches of other candidates, might not be well-received by all England supporters. Despite this, his achievements and ability to maximize team potential make him a noteworthy candidate.

As the search for Southgate’s successor continues, pundits and players will likely keep linking Dyche with the position. The Football Association’s decision will significantly impact Everton, especially with the season’s start approaching. For now, fans and analysts alike will watch closely to see if Dyche will remain at Goodison Park or step into the national spotlight.
