Cyriel Dessers ‘cannot continue’ at Rangers after what he just did

Cyriel Dessers has yet again lived up to his reputation as one of the most mind-blowing Rangers strikers in recent memory.
Dessers outscored last season’s tally of 22 on his 100th appearance for the Light Blues on Saturday evening (29 March), with a last-gasp winner from 3-1 down against Dundee at Dens Park.

It was one of a whopping 12 attempts the Nigeria frontman had to score past Trevor Carson, who had consistently denied him other than a goal disallowed for offside – another regular recent occurrence for Dessers.

Sutton and Boyd slam Dessers despite winner v Dundee
Rangers’ dramatic 4-3 win at Dundee may be obsolete in terms of the league outlook, but certainly provided the travelling supporters with plenty of entertainment, much of it they could have done without.
The defending was abysmal at times from the visitors, and Barry Ferguson will have had a riot act to read at half-time, but the three goals in the final 15 minutes provided huge respite as Rangers recovered, yet again, from two down in the league this term.

Dessers’ excruciatingly frustrating day in Dundee may have ended on a vital high note, but it did not spare him from criticism from Kris Boyd and Chris Sutton.
Boyd scored 68 goals in his first 100 Rangers games to Dessers’ 45, and says the Gers number nine should be improving upon his current record with the opportunities in front of goal he has.
The duo, speaking live on Sky Sports (29 March, 19:43), have admitted Rangers “can’t continue” relying on coming back to win games, echoing Dessers’ post-match comments moments earlier.

“He came up in the end, but as a Rangers striker, he has to be more ruthless,” Sutton said.
“Had he been more ruthless … Rangers are 13 points behind Celtic and that’s not good enough.”
Boyd added: “You’re playing in a team that’s creating chances, [his record] should be a given. Rangers fans will leave joyous that they’ve won the game, but the reality is Dundee are second-bottom of the table, and you’ve had to come from 3-1 behind.
“Scott Tiffoney misses an absolute sitter as well, before he scores. You cannot continue like this. If you’re the Rangers’ number nine, you have to deal with that criticism if you keep missing these chances.
“Fair play to him, he goes home having scored the winner, but getting in those positions is his role.”

Rangers will rely on Dessers in European bid
It goes from one end of the spectrum to the other with Dessers, a player loved and lamented in equal measures by the Rangers supporters.
To score goals at the rate he does is considered prolific in other leagues, but for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership is a prerequisite – as demonstrated previously by the likes of Boyd and Alfredo Morelos.
Make no mistake, Rangers defended horrendously on occasion – and were a lick of paint away from drawing 4-4 but for Simon Murray hitting the post in the dying embers – but should still have hammered Dundee.

Dessers should have scored at least six – that’s no exaggeration.
And he’s experienced enough to remain frustrated with himself despite the excellent finish, which saw him finally breach Carson’s goal. His post-match words demanding his side throw “the first punch” and criticising his own finishing were refreshing to hear.
But when it comes to Europe – in layman’s terms the one that matters for the Ibrox fans this year – Dessers will not get the constant conveyor belt of chances and may just have one moment to make the difference against Athletic Club in their upcoming quarter-final tie, in the same way he did against Fenerbahce.
It is the true litmus test to decide what kind of Rangers striker Dessers will be remembered as.
